Gerrit Cole Becomes Majors' First 14-Game Winner

Gerrit Cole became the majors' first 14-game winner, leading the Pirates to a 3-1 victory over the Nationals on Sunday, according to an Yahoo.com report.

Cole (14-4) allowed one run and seven hits in 7 2/3 innings while improving to 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA in four July starts. The right-hander struck out eight and walked none.

Tim Hudson earned a win against the only team he had never beaten in a 17-year big league career, pitching the Giants past the A's 4-3 on Sunday for a sweep in the Bay Bridge Series.

Matt Duffy hit a two-run homer in the first and drove in three runs, and Brandon Belt added an RBI single in the initial inning to back Hudson, who became the 15th pitcher to defeat all 30 current teams in the majors.

Phillies left-handed ace Cole Hamels enhanced his trade value even more, becoming the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter against the Cubs in 50 years while leading Philadelphia to a 5-0 win Saturday.

There was drama down to the final out, when center fielder Odubel Herrera fell on the warning track but managed to lean forward and catch Kris Bryant's fly ball to end the game.

Hamels struck out 13 in the first no-hitter versus the Cubs since Sandy Koufax pitched a perfect game in 1965.

Reds reliever Aroldis Chapman has set a major league record for the fastest to reach 500 career strikeouts.

Chapman, who routinely throws over 100 mph, reached the mark when he fanned pinch-hitter Giovanny Urshela to end the 10th inning Sunday in Cincinnati's loss to the Cleveland Indians.

The hard-throwing lefty needed just 292 innings to reach 500 strikeouts.

Zack Greinke extended his scoreless streak to 43 2/3 innings, striking a season-high 11 through the eighth and leading the Dodgers over the Nationals 5-0 Sunday.

Greinke's string is the longest in the majors since Orel Hershiser set the major league record of 59 shutout innings in 1988 with the Dodgers.

Greinke (9-2) leads the big leagues with a 1.30 ERA.

Gerrit Cole overcame a rocky start for his 12th win as the Pirates rallied past the Indians 5-3 Sunday.

Cole (12-3) set down his last 16 batters after the Indians scored twice in the second inning and once in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

Cole threw 106 pitches while allowing three runs and five hits in eight innings. He struck out five and walked one after going winless in his previous two starts while pitching a combined 11 1/3 innings.
